Click fraud Google Ads: is it really costing your account money?

Last reviewed October 24, 2026

Quick answerGoogle filters invalid clicks before billing and credits some later; check your Invalid clicks column first. Then weigh a tool: Google's filters run after the ad serves, so some invalid traffic can still reach your site.

Click fraud Google Ads: what Google already filters and credits

Click fraud in Google Ads costs you money through the invalid clicks that get past Google's filters, because Google does not charge for the invalid clicks it finds. Google defines invalid clicks as clicks that do not show genuine interest in your business, such as accidental clicks, automated traffic and manual clicks meant to raise your cost.

Google removes invalid traffic it finds before the end of the billing cycle from your metrics and your bill. If it finds more after the invoice, you get a credit where appropriate and possible.

How to read your own exposure in three places

Check three places in Google Ads, in this order.

  1. Add the Invalid clicks column, which counts clicks Google filtered before billing: select the Columns icon above the campaigns table, then search for "Invalid clicks".
  2. Open Billing, then Summary, and look for "Invalid activity" under the Adjustments dropdown in the Month card. Each is a credit for invalid traffic Google found after it billed you.
  3. Open the Invalid Activity Credit Report in the Report Editor. It shows clicks, cost and conversion rate with credits applied.

Google says a higher Invalid clicks count means its defenses are working, and that many filtered clicks can sit beside small credits in billing. To compare a tool with Google, Fraud Blocker's help center says to add Google's Clicks and Invalid clicks columns together.

How much click fraud is there in Google Ads

Google says there is no industry standard for a normal invalid traffic rate.

Fraud Blocker's pages give the average invalid click rate as both 11.4 and 11.5 percent and the share Google misses as 7.5 percent, 5.8 percent and 2 to 5.5 percent. None of them is a norm; the figure that counts is your own Invalid clicks column.

Fraud Blocker's statistics page says Search campaigns have the highest invalid click rates, while its benchmarks page puts Display and Video at 35.5 percent against 11.2 percent for Search. Both pages are the vendor's own data.

Signs that are not proof of click fraud

These signs can look like click fraud and still be ordinary traffic.

  • A click spike or a budget spent fast. Google says either can cause concern without meaning invalid traffic. Check Change history for your own edits first.
  • Zero-second visits. Google says a zero-second visit can mean the user never left your landing page.
  • Clicks from outside your target area. Google does not guarantee location accuracy in every situation.
  • Ads and analytics totals that differ. Google Ads removes filtered invalid clicks from its reports, but your website analytics may still record the visit.

When a click fraud tool is worth a trial

Google's filters run after the ad is served, so invalid visits can still land on your site and its forms. That gap is the case for a tool. Fraud Blocker's own article says protection is usually unnecessary for small, tightly controlled search campaigns in low-fraud niches, and it admits a vendor has a reason to flag borderline traffic as invalid. It advises pulling 30 to 60 days of campaign data first.

Fraud Blocker's terms say it cannot guarantee catching every bad click. Its 7-day free trial, on Standard or Pro, lets you set its click report beside your Invalid clicks column. Standard is $79 a month on monthly billing after the trial, as read on October 24, 2026.

The dashboard Savings figure is, in its words, an estimate of the bad clicks it would have blocked. The terms call the trial usually 7 days and charge the chosen plan automatically unless you cancel before it ends.
