Competitors clicking on Google Ads: what Google already does
Google counts competitors who manually click your ads to increase your spend as invalid traffic, and it removes or credits what it detects. Competitive click fraud means a rival clicking your ads to drain your budget, and Google names it among the sources of invalid clicks. Google's Invalid clicks column counts the clicks it filtered before billing, so check that column first.
Google removes the invalid traffic it finds before billing, and credits more it finds after the invoice where appropriate and possible. You are not charged for invalid clicks. What matters is the clicks Google does not catch.

Try Fraud Blocker →Signs of a competitor clicking your ads
Fraud Blocker lists repeated clicks from the same IP address or range of IP addresses as a sign of competitor clicking. Look for repeat addresses with clicks but no conversions. Most analytics platforms do not show them, so you need server logs or a tool that captures IPs.
Treat it as a possibility to check, not a verdict on any business. Fraud Blocker itself says a competitor clicking twice a week from a real device in your target city is not necessarily invalid. Google says a click spike or a fast-spent budget does not always mean invalid traffic, and that clicks from outside your target area can be legitimate.
If a pattern shows, Google's investigation request covers the last 60 days and asks for the same evidence: IP addresses with repetitive clicks and server logs. No credit is promised.
How to stop competitors clicking on your ads for free
Two free settings in Google Ads help. Neither is certain, and both can cost reach.
- Exclude the repeat IP addresses in the campaign's Settings, under Additional settings, then IP exclusions. Performance Max and some other campaign types take none at campaign level. How to block IP address in Google Ads has the steps and the list of types.
- Change the location option from "Presence or interest" to "Presence" to focus your reach, or exclude areas. Fraud Blocker's walkthrough puts this under Locations, Advanced Settings in Campaign Settings, and shows where clicks came from under Insights and reports, When and where ads showed, Matched locations.
Fraud Blocker says excluding locations limits exposure to your valid audience and is not always as effective as hoped. Blocking an address can also block a loyal customer, so exclude only addresses with a pattern of clicks and no conversions. The wider free checklist is how to stop click fraud Google Ads.
When the clicks keep coming
Fraud Blocker's article says its options range from the free but fiddly to the paid and more effective. Its software flags IP addresses that click a lot without converting. You set how many clicks per IP it blocks and over what time frame, and an aggressive IP blocking setting raises the sensitivity. Those settings run on every plan from Standard at $79 a month on monthly billing, as read on October 24, 2026.
A block can be undone with one click if it catches a real customer. Fraud Blocker also says Google often shifts campaigns to new sources, which can still produce invalid activity, so a block is not lasting relief.
After the free steps above, Fraud Blocker's 7-day free trial on Standard or Pro is one way to test it before the first charge. The terms call the trial usually 7 days, and the chosen plan is charged automatically unless you cancel before it ends. See best click fraud protection software for other tools.
